Introduction
Note the importance of an “overview” to good hermeneutics (Bible interpretation and application).
Note some of the trouble spots we’ll be seeing in this letter.
I. Examining the historical context of 2nd Peter.
What was going on when Peter wrote this letter? What was life like? Who wrote this letter and who was it written to?
A. 1st Peter written around AD 63-64 and 2nd Peter around AD64- 66.
B. Remember how people in Peter’s day received their information.
C. Who wrote 2nd Peter and to whom was written. See 1st Peter 1:1 and 2nd Peter 1:1.
1. Written by the apostle Peter.
Background of Peter’s life.
A humbling thought: Peter had some warts and yet God still used him mightily. See various Scriptures.
2. Written to the same people he was writing to in 1st Peter. See 3:1.
II. Examining the Biblical context of 2nd Peter.
Conclusion
A. Remember there is a right way and a wrong way to study and interpret any literature – including the Bible.
B. It doesn’t matter how old we are or how young we are. God uses broken things.
C. This little letter is extremely pertinent and applicable to the days in which we live.
